COVID-19 Cleaning Information from CDC and EPA
When it comes to protecting yourself and others during the COVID-19 pandemic, most people are already taking precautions such as extra hand washing, social distancing, and sanitizing surfaces, but have you thought about cleaning your car? As you come and go after running essential errands or grocery shopping, the surfaces in your car interior and some exterior surfaces may become exposed to the virus. Here are some suggestions for safely cleaning your vehicle.
Centers for Disease Control’s Cleaning and Disinfection for Households recommends removing visible contamination and cleaning with appropriate cleaners indicated for use on various surfaces, as well as laundering and completely drying soft, porous smaller items, using the warmest appropriate water setting according to manufacturer’s instructions. Follow the same advice suggested for household cleaning in your car to help prevent the spread of this virus. Thoroughly clean every surface of your vehicle. If you have seat covers, you can remove and wash them according to manufacturer's instructions. Don't forget to clean the exterior, as well, especially door handles and high-touch portions of the vehicle exterior.
Use cleaning products that are safe for leather, glass, plastic, carpet, upholstery, PVC/ABS, or whatever surfaces are in your vehicle. For specific product recommendations, the Environmental Protection Agency published List N: Disinfectants for Use Against SARS-CoV-2. If you are unable to find manufacturer-recommended products for use against SARS-CoV2 suitable for your vehicle surfaces on the list, look for product labels that confirm an EPA registration number and have human coronavirus listed as a target pathogen. Be sure to follow the label directions for use, including the proper amount of contact time.
