WINDSHIELD CAMERA CALIBRATION
We specialize in recalibrating Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS) with windshield replacement.
In the past, when you needed your windshield replaced, a new windshield was simply installed in your vehicle. In recent years, things have drastically changed. Auto makers have added new systems to help increase driver safety, such as adaptive cruise control, lane departure warning, lane keeping assist, automatic emergency breaking, traffic sign recognition, and pedestrian detection. When your windshield is replaced, these systems must be recalibrated in order to function properly. At Troy Auto Glass, our technicians have been trained in all aspects of the calibration process, from software and radar to precision laser alignment, and more, so that your vehicle safety features meet factory standards.
How ADAS Technology and Windshield Camera Calibration Works
First of all, what is calibration? Calibration can mean different things in different situations. For example, when you adjust the temperature in your vehicle, you have calibrated the heating and cooling system. Of course, in ADAS systems, calibration is a lot more complicated than this example. In laymen's terms, ADAS calibration is an adjustment of vehicle sensor settings so that the system operates within factory specifications. When properly calibrated, the ADAS will be precise and accurate in its measurements and function correctly, as designed.
At Troy Auto Glass we use the Autel system for our ADAS windshield recalibration services. This specialized equipment consists of both hardware and software. The software will give the proper settings for the make and model being calibrated so that the vehicle computer can then be reset properly. The hardware consists of a pattern board that sits on a horizontal frame and several different types of measuring devices used to target the exact center of the car. The whole frame rests on an adjustable base, which we use to properly align everything. If you are concerned about the cost of this service, the cost of replacement and recalibration is covered with comprehensive insurance (after the deductible).
About Static and Dynamic Recalibration
There are two types of recalibration, Static Recalibration and Dynamic Recalibration. Static Calibration is done using a fixed marker ahead of the car to properly set the system. Dynamic Recalibration involves the car going through a wide range of movement. Not all vehicles have all of the ADAS features. Depending on the make and model of your vehicle, one or both types of recalibration will be required.

Accurate ADAS settings are extremely important, because the safety technology of your vehicle depends on these systems functioning precisely and accurately. If recalibration is not done after your windshield is replaced, you may be at some risk. For instance, if your lane departure warning may give you a false reading, as if you were steering your car into another lane. Your adaptive cruise control may malfunction or your automatic braking system may not work as intended, braking too soon, or worse yet, too late. With our precision ADAS calibration services, you can have confidence that these systems are getting accurate data. Some less-than-reputable companies offering windshield replacement services are not keeping up with ADAS technologies. Improper settings or no calibration could put you at risk. At Troy Auto Glass, we value advanced training and education. You can be confident that when we replace your windshield, the windshield camera and all aspects of ADAS will be calibrated correctly so that when you drive away, you drive away safely.
